Default Concealed barrel hinge locator - take 2

Due to the grain structure of the zebra wood (or my drilling prowess, I'm going with the grain structure) anyway, they were slightly out, luckily a colleague at the Woodshop has a friend with a CNCl and drilled 3.5mm holes 25mm outside of a 5mm hole, perfectly in line in a piece of 40x20 aluminium flat bar that I had knocking around.

However accurate this is, there is one drawback and that's the fact I used Aluminium, and the more tests I made the more I noticed slight silver shavings in the dust from the holes drilled, and as such is now ever so slightly out, probably 0.3-0.4mm.

so I might see if it can be put back on the CNC and have the hole drilled out to accept some 10mm stainless threaded rod and have the 5mm hole re-drilled. The stainless should hold up better than the Aluminium.

Jig looks good. Would be even better if you were able to get a hardened insert pressed in.
Do you drill by hand or use a drill press when drilling your holes?

Exactly, that's what I want to achieve with the stainless, hopefully it will do the trick.

Using this jig I drill by hand, the jig removes the need for a drill press.

    Fumbler,

Great work - it does an otherwise very difficult task with maximum simplicity. Look forward to seeing how you go with the stainless steel.

Stainless is not that hard but at least harder than aluminium and you won't get that dirty grey dust coming from it.

I now have several choices 1. Stainless screw lug (hard to describe) 2, a casehardened sleeve 5mm ID 12.5mm OD by 19mm long or 3. 5mm ID titanium tube. As far as trying to keep the costs down, I am now thinking, bugger the cost, it's doing a specific job, not just a centre finder, it sets the centre yes, but it also accurately sets the distance from the edge of the box, and it also is set for difficult Barrel hinge set up, so the need far outweighs the cost, if u get my drift. The time saving alone of not having to plug and redrill if I get it wrong, etc. so the costs are as follows
    1. Stainless lug - $1.00 (bought in store)
    2. Case hardened steel sleeve - $32.00 + postage (from Aus) can get in 3days
    3. Titanium tube - $17.00 including postage (from china) 21+ days
so now I have to think about which one to go and the easiest option to install. Although if I saw a jig like this on sale for $50 I would seriously say no way as too expensive, but knowing now how difficult these hinges can be to install, it's probably worth it.
