    Default Concealed barrel hinge locator

I didn't have the best experience drilling some barrel hinges first time round as they were slightly out, so I made this jig. It's basically a centre finder jig, but made to take a 5mm drill for the barrel hinges. And it will set the hinges equi-distant from the corner of the box every time. It should work particularly well if you can't predrill before putting the lid top on where the holes will be covered by the box top, if that makes sense. But it can also work as a centre finder by using a 5mm rod with a point, instead of a drill bit.

wood used is zebra wood, brass tube and M4 bolts.

    Love your work, Fumbler!

Artistic as well as being a smart idea.

I haven't used the concealed hinges, but wouldn't dowel locators also do the trick?

Brian, locator pins for dowels only come in 4/6/8/10mm, Barrel hinges are 5mm so no joy there. I had also thought about using 5mm brass rod turned to a very fine point and pressing the lid together, but it also comes down to machinery as well, if they aren't perfectly perpendicular or the drill press head is loose it may allow the drill bit to wander.

im hoping this works, I have just made a box out of jarrah to test. And I'll post photos when done a work or a fail.

I have only used barrel hinges successfully where I can use the drill press to drill the holes in the box before attaching the lid and cutting the lid section from the body

even the smallest mismatch in alignment with these hinges causes tears

Fumblers tool may be the answer for centralising and lateral alignment

    regards

Ok, small fail here guys. The centre hole was just slightly out and as such did not line up in the centre. This being the case I had to keep the jig in the same place then mark the other side to get it equidistant. Had it been spot on I could've just turned it round and all would be apples. I did rescue where they didn't meet up.

the holes/guides need to be dead set accurate so it can be used either way round. So I need to find someone with a CNC machine to drill the holes exactly.

the test box below. The holes

Now for this last pic. Let's see who doesn't need glasses. who can see where the line of the lid is?

Not bad for a 10minute test box. Well not exactly 10min but you know what I mean.
