    Default Dodecahedron

Not quite sure where to post this but I guess it is a box as you can take the lid off and put stuff inside it.
I made this from New Guinea Rosewood and put a remote controlled LED light in it that can be set to fade through about 8 different colours.
The Dodecahedron consist of twelve pentagons and each edge of the pentagons have small rare earth magnets fitted so that it is easy to assemble, can be fun for kids and when assembled it becomes a decorative art piece/box. There are a few jigs you need to make to assist cutting the pentagons and also another jig to ensure you get the magnet holes correctly located on each face.
I chose to cut out some silhouettes with the scroll saw on each face to decorate the item.

And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

    Wow, really innovative.

That would keep kids busy for some time assembling it...

    Love that box.
I've made a few sets of Platonic solid boxes, but none as nice as that.
You will have discovered as I did, that the dodecahedron is the hardest to make accurately (and it needs to be made accurately), because you can't simply inscribe the radius on the diameter of a circle. Well done!

Thanks for the comments. Alex ,I found that making the jig to cut the pentagons required accuracy and then the repetition of cutting the pentagons was not so difficult. Also I made a special jig to drill the blind holes for the 3 mm dia magnets.
The main reason I made the item was to create an easy to assemble tactile toy as a teaching aid for kids with disabilities.

Also a nice toy for adults without disabilities.

    Cheers,

If you want to punish yourself there is always the horse hair shirt and a daily self flagellation with a knotted rope. The advantage is you would be sane at the end of it. I doubt sanity is assured after trying to make this beautiful box. Your reason for making it is admirable. All the best.
