Default When things don't quite work out

    Hi again,

Been trying a few new things out, and things didn't quite go to plan.

First is a box made from hardwood, not sure exactly but I think its red gum, rather simple construction, mitred corners, biscuit joined lid, brass hinges. It need something so basic inlay was tried, bonewood strips.
Surprisingly that worked out ok, was rather happy with my first attempt at it, but then I decided it needed a latch.

Wrong thing to do, it just doesn't look right now.

Next project was another simple box, was given a rough sawn piece of camphor laurel, approx 85mm x 85mm x 270mm. one end had drying cracks in it so was sawn off. This then became the test piece, sliced the top off, hollowed it out using forsntner bit, decided not to use that method, then having never installed concealed barrel hinges before, used it to practice installing them, then tried out a bit of shaping with the WASP sander to see how it looks.
After the tests piece seem to work the remainder was made into a little box:

Feeling pretty happy with myself , SWMBO was called to be shown my latest creation. SWMBO ignored it and went straight to the test piece "Oh isn't that cute"

    Detail showing drying cracks

So then SWMBO made me line it

Shot showing the end grain matching on both boxes

We all know that the smaller box may fall to pieces at anytime, but SWMBO just loves it to bits, might give the oil a few weeks drying time and see if it can be stabilised with epoxy resin or something.
The box I was so proud of ?

    never got a second glance..........

Sorry about dual post, don't know how that happened

Default I agree with your wife...

I really like the look of hte little box. THe cracks really add to the character of the piece. Lets just hope it holds together over the years.

Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think...that a time is to come when those (heirlooms) will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, ‘See! This our father did for us.’ “ --John Ruskin. Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide, 1923 Theo Audel & CO. New York.

Cruzi, I like the look of those hinges on the 2 Camphor boxes, where did you get them?

Cruzi ... been there, and it hurts!
If she loves the prototype ... you're ahead. Keep filling the cracks with epoxy until it falls part. My wife appreciates the fallibilities of life and nature and seems to enjoy all sorts of symbolism in nature taking my creations back to sawdust. If the catch on the inlayed box is causing grief then remove it and replace it with inlayed magnets.

I think they are unique and perhaps the small one giving you concern could be put into a glass case (framed) and might preserve

Going to try some of that Chair doctor glue on the small box, mind you, whilst giving it another coat of wax on the buffer and it flew across the workshop bounced off a board or two and somehow still held together, so it could be stronger than it looks, damage was a tiny ding on bottom !!!

Baz, got those hinges from Timbercon, but there are quite a few places that stock them

there are more around, try looking for concealed barrel hinges.

Fletty, would dearly love to remove the catch but that would leave me with 4 nail holes to try and fill and blend in. My skills are nowhere near able to blend such things invisibley.

Replaced the catch on the inlay box and put black flocking in it, much happier with it now.

Not too bad at all, Cruzi. Excellent result for your first attempt at inlay work, and quite intriging results with your hollowed solid boxes. No wonder Mrs Cruzi was impressed.

Interested in your methods of hollowing out the hollow boxes. You say the the forstner drills bits were not successful? What was the problem? Also, I know its probably obvious, but what is a WASP sander? One final question; what did you use to "slice the top off" the solid boxes?

Not too shabby...in fact, very nice.

Where did you get that nice catch from?
