    Default Two dovetail jewellery boxes

Greetings from a new chum to this forum.

I've made a few boxes as gifts for friends and family since my wife bought me a Gifkins Dovetail jig about 10 years ago, but late last year a colleague from my wood turning group gave me the number of a friend of his who wanted to commission some 21st birthday gifts for her grand children. The pics below show the results.

The first one was about 27cm x 15cm x 7cm, in New Guinea Rosewood with a Tasmanian Myrtle top panel, finished with Danish oil. I put some green synthetic felt in the bottom of it. She was very happy with it. She planned to stick an engraved plaque in the top saying "Happy 21st Birthday ...".

The second one is bigger, about 33cm x 18cm x 9cm, also in New Guinea Rosewood but with a Tasmanian Blackwood top panel, also finished with Danish Oil. The size was dictated by the width of the Blackwood board that I had. It gets delivered tomorrow and hopefully she will be happy with this one also, which means there will most likely be a couple more to do during the next year or so.

In both boxes the carcass timber is about 7mm thick, while the tops are about 8mm with the edges routed down to 4mm to fit into slots routed inside the sides. The bases are 4mm marine ply. The sides and tops were cut from 42mm material, sliced into three (about 11mm) on the bandsaw then thicknessed.

The boxes were made in one piece then cut apart on the band saw and sanded. The hinges are from Timberbits (I think).

The router is a Ryobi 1/2" mounted in an Aldi router table - noisy but it works OK.

They don't really compare with some of the great work you guys exhibit, but I was happy with the results.

    regards, Colin

Well done on the boxes and some very nice grain pattens showing on the tops.

Nice work on those boxes. I like the proportions and you've used nice timbers.
Can I suggest that for your next boxes, you look at good quality solid brass hinges, and consider some form of opening grip, either a lifting handle or a finger slot, or a clasp.

    Really nice work.

Thanks for your nice comments Christos and Alex - I will investigate other hinges.

I'm pleased to report that my customer has gone away happy with the second box today, and has put me on notice for two more for this time next year.

I'll be away for the Sydney wood show so I just might need to go visit Trend Timbers later in the year for some interesting top panels.

    cheers, Colin
