    Default Dovetails

    Some dovetail action [emoji4]

Sides are London plane or something, top unknown and bottom purple heart.

Very nice boxes. Musta been a bit hard to find purple heart over there in NZ. I just had 7 weeks over there and didn't really come across any woodwork at all, cept the occasional weekend markets.

You should have visited me Paul [emoji16].

The purple heart I have is from offcuts I got from a builder who used it for a deck install, go figure, who puts in a purple heart deck?

Nice neat dovetails and the top panel looks really nice.
I'm with Paul, when I was over there I only saw one place selling timber products that were not mass produced. I thought for such a beautiful country woodwork would be a common pastime, but alas it doesn't seem to be. Maybe we just went to the wrong places and needed better local knowledge.

Don't know if it's still the case, but I believe that in its native countries in Central America, purpleheart was commonly used for stair treads and such.

Lovely piece of timber you have used for the lid. Everything looks nice and crisp.

Absolutely correct. The trees grow near river banks in central America and the timber is prized for it's resistance to rot. Of course, untreated and left outside, it won't be purple for more than a week or so before it reverts back to brown. Still, it is a dense, heavy hardwood with good wear characteristics.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
