    Default Drifting Sand Boxes

The recent Brisbane rains limited outdoor activity so I spent some time using up some offcuts of Huon Pine and Tas. myrtle that I picked up out of the scrap box at Morrissons Mill in Strahan Tasie some time ago, most were around 300x70x40 so the box sizes reflect the available timber. The drifting sands idea come from the drifting sand dunes of Dubai and were done free style with a mini Arbortec attachment and finished through the grits using a flexible home made sanding disc from an inner tube valve stem.....here is the results.

Look great. I suspect that the worked tops look better than the photos show.

Wendy, to answer your question my best tip for using an Arbortec is to relax, keeping a firm control of the tool and use smooth flowing movements., taking shallow cuts with each pass following a predetermined pattern . I normally mark out with a 2b pencil. If you don't have an Arbortec a soft edge sanding disc starting with 100 or 120 grit paper can achieve just as good results just takes a little longer. One of my favourite tools is a Makita right angle drill as it gives you far greater control than a standard drill.
I find that a soft edge sanding disc is almost a necessity if you wish to get a sharp edge to your sculpture( such as an inner tube valve photo attached) along with images of some of my early boxes using the same technique.

    Thanks Kerry

I've been eyeing off these style of boxes for a while now and have an idea brewing and bubbling away, so your information and experience is greatly appreciated.

    cheers

    Nice work Kerry!
The Arbortec technique / effect is very special, a very fine collection of boxes.

kcam: I normally go out of my way to have a good look at any and all hand-crafted wood works. I thought I'd seen it all. Wrong.
Those are the most gorgeously styled boxes that I have ever seen.
