My Favourite Box Timbers
GDay
Just finished this box as a 50th birthday present for my sister in law. Used my favouirite combination of timbers being Jarrah (with dark fleck through it) and Mtrtle burl panel. Unfortunately my supply of both is rapidly reducing. Photos are ordinary but hope you like it.
Best Regards
Greg

Just simply beautiful.

G'day Greg,
Another classic!
I've got to admit that Jarrah is my favourite for box carcasses....but I'm down to recycling "rescued" BBQ settings....Love the Myrtle top though

Hi Noel
Not sure about Victoria but I have occaisionally found some really nice Jarrah being sold as fence palings at that big hardware store. Many of them have large gum veins throughout but by sorting through the pile I have found around 1 in 10 are select grade and they are relatively cheap. Whilst they are not always stocked, it's worth keeping an eye out for them.
Regards
Greg

Great looking box! Is that one of Roger Gikins boxes from his plans. Kind of looks like it. I have yet to make one that style.

A good looking box Greg.
The myrtle burl adds a lot of life to the box.
How did you cut the burl?
I like the regal purple lining too.Scally

It must be difficult making boxes with timber like that, your tools need to be kept sharp?
Look forward to seeing more of your box making when available.woody U.K.

Hi Scally'
I cut the burl to approx thickness on an industrial bandsaw, joint one face then run it through my thickness sander (PerformaX 10/20). I hesitated for a long time before buying the 10/20 but I now get so much use out of it. It allows me to use many small offcuts of burl and highly figured timber that are too small to safely put through the thicknesser.
The industrial bandsaw belongs to the Woodturners Of The Hunter. We do alot of general woodwork, I am currently running boxmaking workshops and have had thirty guys make their first box. Your vast array of skills would be greatly appreciated at the club so maybe you should consider joining.
Regards
Greg

Thanks Greg
I will be in touch.
It would be good to play with a big bandsaw.
The thickness sander is on the shopping list.Scally
