Finger Joints
Hi all, I've recently finished building a jig that allows me to make finger joints down to 2.5mm, the thickness of my table saw blade. Took a bit of working out how to clamp the timber in, whilst the saw is running through the timber, but I think I have mastered this now. I should be able to do 2.5mm fingers (and spaces) and pretty much any increment or half increment up from that, eg, 3.75mm, 5mm, 6.25mm and so on. I'll do some experimenting shortly, have so many projects on at the moment. Here are a couple of pics. Very neat finger joints and a nice change to dovetails.
Oldest son from Sydney arrives tomorrow with his old Tarago, wants me to convert it into a campervan for him,...!!!!!, all in 3 days. Then Friday we take off for a couple of weeks to catch up with the kids again.

The joints look great. Any photos of your jig?

2.5 is so tiny What a task to cut 8 ends of 100mm!

Hi again,
Sorry for the slow reply. I've been on a timetable, to convert my sons old Tarago into a campervan, in 3 days. 3 days is up today and it is pretty much finished, I was pretty impressed with the final results and so was he. He leaves to head back to Sydney in the morning and we leave also in the morning to head over to other sons place in Molong, for the last week of the school holidays, then home via Sydney, for a few more days or so, with the son who is here now.
Anyway, I took 3 quick pics of my finger joint jig this arvo. I purchased the plans via the internet from a chap named Matthius, I am sure you have all seen his youtube videos, extremely clever bloke. Just google Matthius advanced finger joint jig on youtube and you will see a demo of it. Upon finishing this project I added a couple of my own modifications, then had to come up with a very good clamping system in order to hold 4 rather small pieces of timber in the jig whilst pushing it through my table saw. I am pretty happy with the outcome. Not sure if these photos will do it justice but you might get my drift. Two full turns of this 27 tooth gear and it drags the workpiece exactly 2.5mm across the blade. It took me several making of gears to get it just right. In an email to Matthius he said I might have to play with it a bit, to get it right for my needs.
Hence 3 turns would drag it 3.75mm, and so on.

Nice build. This one is even simpler to build and variable according to the thread you use S-shaped occasional table using only finger joints . The OP has used a 3/8" 16 threaded rod, but there's no reason you couldn't use a metric thread as long as you work out the relation between your saw blade kerf and the lead screw pitch. It would work on router tables as well. In the absence of an Incra fence, and potentially a lot of mucking around (read room for human errors) any of these lead screw technologies are excellent.

Great Jig I just started watching Mr M regularly also is great to see a thriving Do it yourself engineer it yourself community on Youtube LOL back in the day it was Watching David MArks via the DIY channel in the US!
Ive just started getting back into woodwork n was reminded how much I love fingerjoints I love the Dimensions you've used to get that 'Spindly finger Look' Top Job hope to see you use them more on a bigger scale
Just out of curiosity how did you find Mr M's plans were they over complicated or spot on? any feedback really appreiated

Hi Dave and Lou, Dave I shall watch that video all the way through again, it does look pretty good. Lou, I also purchases Matthius' plans for the 3D pantograph router. I put some pics on the router jig section of this forum. I found Matthius plans excellent, the odd occasion I scratched my head a bit but figured it out. He gives you a lot of info including 1 to 1 templates to print out and glue onto timber, then cut out. The other good thing he has done free videos on these builds also, so just about everything is covered.
And for 12 bucks USA, how can you go wrong,

That is certainly a signature Matthius jig. He makes everything sound and look so easy, and loves his gears.
Looks like you've done a great job on replicating his plansDallas
