    Default Flame Rosewood box

Small box made using flame rosewood for the lid panel. It's very striking, with lots of different reds in there.

Mitred corners, with splines. Finished with Minwax WOP, then with Ubeaut wax.

Hinges are SmartHinges, from Andrew Crawford.

This is a gift for a friend who is getting married soon.

    Comments and questions welcome.

    cheers,

    ajw

Nice, simple box. Can't go wrong. The figure in the lid sets it off well - if it had all been in the flame rosewood it would have looked too busy.

Very nicely done, with the contrasting lid a good choice. What timber is the box ?

Liked the brownish keys in the mitre joints - what timber was this?

How did you do the lid, and allow for lid expansion?

I think it is a very neat, attractive box - well done!
    regards,

The box is rosewood, and the mitres are rosewood too. They come out a slightly different colour because of the grain orientation.

The lid sits in a groove, and it floats (not glued), and the groove is around 2 mm wider than the panel to allow for movement.

    thanks for the nice comments.

Very nice indeed. Those hinges really make a difference and I believe are worth the cost when you make a box this good.

    Red face Great Choice...

You've made a great choice for the top. The wood is lovely! Looks as if you did a stellar job all around. Congratulations!

Great looking box, I love it. I love to work with rosewood, although it does stain your clothes pretty much. I'm just about to start another box which will be predominantly all in rosewood also.
