Default Flatten veneer with PVA in solution?

Hello, I want to flatten a burl veneer with a mixture of 6 parts water, 3 parts metho and one part glycerin. Has worked nicely in the past.

I have read that there are mixtures with a similar proportions, but it also includes some PVA glue to keep it stiff after flattening and drying by clamping between sheets of paper.

Has anyone done this successfully? How does it affect the finish on the face side of the veneer after it has been glued with PVA to a substrate?
    regards,

    Dengy

I have done the above ratio or one very similar and left the pva out and they dried flat. I finished it with shellac. I used tight bond to glue it onto my plywood substrate for the box lid

    Hi Dengue,

I’ll be interested in the replies to this thread. I would expect the PVA to discolour the wood (depending on the type of PVA) and prevent any finish soaking in. However, I’ve never tried it.....

I use the meth/water/glycerin mix, flatten the veneer, then as soon as it is dry enough to use, glue up the panel and put it back in the press. I don’t give it time to go back to its original shape.

Something I saw recently suggested putting aniline dye in the glue to match the veneer colour in the event of bleed-through, especially with burr veneer where there are voids.
