Default A gift for my partner

Ok I am working on this one in bits and pieces as I have to keep this hidden from my partner as it is for her birthday next month. But I decided to try and make her a jewelery box from a mix of timber i have on hand. Also this is my first time dealing with finger joints so yes they do look a bit like a dogs breakfast.

So far this is the lid for it in the rough, top is Canadian cedar and the sides are Rimu, I glued the top on and used dowel pins on the corners for both a cos metic look and to make things a little bit stronger ( I hope ). This will get a tidy up with the block plane after the glue has set

Crikey, not much space to work in there. Persistence is the key. If you are unhappy with your work, do it again. If you don't have time to redo parts then leave it as it is. If you are happy with what you've made then leave it be. But it's been my experience that partners' will receive anything you made yourself for her with joy and happiness and true love in her heart.

Yes I do need to tidy up the work bench got stuff all over the show at the moment as I have been tidying up rusty old tools I have been buying and I have one other thing that I am finishing off, so much for keeping all the junk off the bench. I am happy with what I have been doing and have to learn by my mistakes like we all do but I found a how to on making a finger jointing jig so I will be looking into making one of those as hand cut finger joints are a pain in the butt to do but practice makes improvements.

Good on you for giving it a go, Skilsaw. Please post some pics once you’ve finished it. i agree with LGS - your partner will treasure it just because it was made by you.

yeah, great work - and I'm sure she'll treasure it, and will treasure the next one you make as you learn new skills and build one that's better in your eyes.

Gee, you're giving yourself a challenge making the top and body of the box separately. Good luck with it. My first effort at a box - corner post with box joints - is still sitting on my bench. Let's just say that I was less than happy with it. I'm sure you'll learn heaps, I did.

This is how it has come up so far after tidying up the lid today, have started to make the box itself and using the lid to get the right size and numbering each piece and side of the lid so everything corresponds as I will be mitre joining the box and will also be making a jig to use on the triton mk3 to cut spline slots. Also this is being made from off cuts so I don't waste any of the rimu timber I have been using. The canadian cedar top goes quite well with the rimu sides

I like the dowels in the corners. It's makes for a nice detail. I might borrow that idea in a future box.

I have a tendency to try and make things to how I picture them in my mind if I get an idea I try it and see if I can pull it off, I also like to use dowels to hide screws

Well I am back hiding in the man cave, have just finished making the bottom part of this box, used cedar for it and cut some dadoes to hold the base of the box in place, there is going to be some gap filling going on around those finger joints but at least i am giving it a go.

Bottom of box is out of the clamps and all tidied up with my no 3 and block planes and trued up to suit the lid. This is how it is looking so far just need to fill a few gaps in the joins with wood filler already looking online at hinges, catch and corner protectors to go onto this box at the moment thinking about antique style ones.

As far as filling gaps/cracks go, i have had much more success with using wax pencils - Minwax brand.
You finish it first, and then match the wax colour to the finish. it can become quite invisible with a good colour match.
