Sorry but I just need to resurrect this old thread. The box has been returned to me to change the text and spruik it up a bit to go on display on the centenary of Sylvester’s death on 23rd August. The history of the man himself is slowly being discovered and I’m expecting a very moving day.....

Fletty
Thanks for reminding us of a very moving story. So many underlying issues: The futility of war, the "bulletproofness" of the adolescent male, the indecent haste with which leaders commit their subjects to war, but overall a most moving story.
Thank you.

I don't know how I missed this build the first time round; but I'd like to echo everybody else's admiration for your artistic vision and the spectacular execution at every stage.
Even the "incorrect" latch... is right. Re-using whatever materials were lying at hand to make whatever was needed at the time gave rise to trench art and I feel the latch fits the theme.
Well done that man.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

The last post....... I promise!
I drove up to Trangie for the gathering in memory of Sylvester Sullivan on the 100th anniversary of his death in action in WW1. It was a beautiful day with just a few, but very heartfelt, speeches.
The local Men’s Shed had made a stand for the box out of (what appears to be) red gum and it sits in a corner with lots of displays relating to Sylvester and his family.

The gentleman who photographed his grave in France, was given a memorial plaque by the local mayor to “thank the Australians who freed his village” and this plaque was donated to stand beside the box. Not a dry eye in the house.........
