Well, I got some power sanders and paper to 180 and then finished with 360, 600, 800 and 1200. Highest I could find in Bunnings.

I also got some tung oil and have given it about five coats so far. It soaked in quite nicely but I have noticed it 'bubbling' up out of the pores. I think I will wait for it to really dry out and then I will sand it, best to start at 1200 or go back a few grades?

It looks very nice to my eyes so thank you for the sanding and finishing advice.

I have cut the iron bands to rough size and started on the hinges.

I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile putting something between the metal straps and the wood. I was thinking about a strip if leather or something along those lines, just to protect the wood from future rust or similar.

    Thanks again.

Congratulations on this work, Mark, your persistence has paid really off. You have far exceeded all our expectations when you first said you were going to use warped garden stakes from Crazy Clarks

    Well done
    regards,

    Dengy

Well thanks for that! It has been a real journey and it isn't over yet, still got to get to grips with some metal work and leatherwork which is as new to me as the wodwork is. To be honest I thought this was going to be a practice box to be hidden in the shed when I gave up on it.

It is pretty thin in some places so I have learned that a power belt sander with 40 grit is not something to use withut a bit of caution but other than that it might be quite servicable.

My wife is keen on a jewelery box now she has seen this one but I think I will take some of the earlier advice and get some dressed wood from Bunnings and use that, I will be back to the mahogany for a treasure chest though.

    Thanks for the kind words,
    Mark
