    Default Hand tool card box

    Hi all,

I thought I'd post some pics of a card box made for a gamer friend.
I've made a few of these now as a sideline income.
The game is Magic the Gathering, and the inlay is one of the iconic symbols of the game.

All stock was dimensioned with hand tools. Stopped dados for the dividers (which are removable), stopped grooves for the base, and hand cut dovetails.
The inlay was cut with a fret saw, and was inset with gouges, carving chisels and a small router plane.
Rare earth magnets keep the lid from sliding off. The finger hole on the lid is carved with a gouge.
Timbers are Red Cedar and Houn Pine.
I apologize for the poor photography I didn't get good shots of the dovetails before I had to hand it over.

Top job - looks great I envy your hand-skills - wish I had the time and patience to do somethng without electricity! Actually I'd be happy with just the time to try something like that

    Thanks Vern and Alex ....

After looking at both your websites, I'm humbled. You do good work
I'm mainly a furniture restorer, but making boxes is a great way to use up scraps and make a bit of pocket money.

    Thanks again,
    Stu

    Very well done.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'

If I only had a brain.

Nice deck box, I play MtG as well and the plastic boxes break too easily and they aren't in keeping with the theme of the game.

I planned on making a similar box as a gift for a fellow player a bit later as part of a 'Secret Santa' exchange, I was going to use hinges rather than a slide.

I love the Mana symbol on the lid, looks very nice. Don't think I will try that!

I'm just dreading the requests for the mountain and plains inlay. They're the tricky ones with hand tools

    Hi Dengy,

It's finished with shellac (with a dash of BLO for lube), and buffed with a hard wax.
Basically French polished with a shellac 'mouse'.

I decided to avoid anything like that on copyright issues (that's my excuse anyway).

Instead I found some Barramundi leather samples which have been dyed in all five colours, with a bit of imagination you can sort of pretend they are dragon scales. There should be enough to inaly into the top of a single box.

I played with coloured sleeves for my decks and one thing I did find out was that other players recognise them and remember the last deck that was in it. When they see the Green box come out they will chose a black deck to play against it!
