Heading to Tasmania
Hi gang, I/we are heading down to Tasmania for a bit over a month on Monday, flying to Launceston and hiring a car. If anyone has any favourite woodwork haunts down there which are "must see" places, would love the details.
We were there about 10 or 12 years ago, but just wanted to go back again. I haven't made a box since before Christmas, I need some inspiration. I've been too busy finishing off an acoustic guitar build, very close to finish now, shall put a few pics up when I get back.
Regards, Paul

We stopped at The Wall in the Wilderness when we were in Tasmania last year. I was a bit sceptical, but thought it was an excellent way to see the result of a dedicate sculptor.
Just note that no photography is allowed inside the building.
The onsite "cafe" also has some excellent food.
Details for The Wall can be found here.
Strahan also has a nice little shop (right next door to a couple of places that sell a range of Tasmanian wood). The name of the shop escapes me at the moment, but somebody will know.

Hi and thanks for your comments. I will be definitely checking out Strahan. I remember when we were there 10 or 12 years ago, there was a big offcut bin outside that woodwork shop, I think offcuts were $1 each, will check that out again. And John, thanks for your kind offer. We arrive at Launceston this Monday 6th, and booked into an old cottage at Invermay for one full week. From there next stop is Ulverston for I think 4 nights. I just looked and Deloraine is right smack on that path. So I will definately be driving through Deloraine on Monday 13th. I'll phone you closer and get the address of your community shed. And I have my tea black, no sugar or milk....!!

+1 for a visit to The Wall, absolutely amazing wood carving and all in huge Huon Pine panels.
As for Strahan, I think this may ne the wood gallery you are referring to

Next door is a small saw mill cutting old Huon logs recovered from under water. I bought several slabs of it, would have bought more but ran out of room.

The Design Center in Launceston has nice stuff. If you come east, I have a workshop at Scottsdale (Tasmanian Burl) on the main "Hwy" heading towards the east coast. You are welcome to drop in. Just msg me early am. or the night before as theres not much reception at the shed.
Regards. Jason.

Thanks all, for all this information. I am currently in Sydney at our sons place and Flying to Launceston early tomorrow for one week at Invermay, apparently a suburb of Launceston. Jason looking at the google map now, your about 70kms from Launceston. I'll certainly endeavour to get to your workshop. I'll message you later and hopefully give you day. I'll only have a hire car.
Regards, Paul

Hi all, just a bit of an update. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet TasSculptor, my times got a bit skew wiff that day, and I missed him, sorry Jason. I did get to meet John T, at his Community Shed at Deloraine, a great setup they have there. Wish I had access to that sort of equipment on a regular basis. I also met a couple of other blokes, I don't think they are on this forum, but I wont mention names. One chap was the President of a certain Woodwork club and was kind enough to do me up a nice parcel of various timber, at a very generous price also. The other chap I met, I ended up going out to his property on 35 acres, and he had an amazing setup. A bit better than my double garage where I have to drive my car out before I can do my woodwork. He used to work in a sawmill and had equipment all over the place in a huge workshop. Then he showed me a pile of what I would have thought was firewood, maybe about 5 ton of it, he told me it was all huon pine, been sitting there for about ten years. Then he took me to another shed, the size of my double garage, and it was chock a block full of huon pine. Probably tons of it. Cannot even walk in that shed without walking over stacks of huon pine. He also sold me a very very generous heap of timber at a modest price.
And I still haven't got to Strahan or Geeveston yet, that's still to come.
The display at the Design place at Launceston was top class, excellent work there. Now at Ulverstone
