Hinge installation problems
Hi
I recently started in box making using the Gifkins jig. I have been getting great results. However one of my great frustrations is getting the hinges right. In the attached photos of a box it shows that I seem to have placed the hinges so the barrell levers the box lid unevenly. Can anyone point me to a good reference either web or otherwise that helps with the basics of Box making. Any tips greatly appreciated.Last edited by pwjupp; 7th October 2009 at 10:34 AM. Doug Stowe's box making references are great:
http://www.dougstowe.com/book/book4.htm
[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Tauntons-Complete-Illustrated-Guide-Making/dp/1561585939]Amazon.com: Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Box Making (0094115585934): Doug Stowe: Books[/ame]
The book comes with accompanying DVD.
You might also find the book and dvd available through your library.
Cheers,
-T.

windsurfer
placement of hinges appears appears too centered although that may not be the problem . gifkin has a section on hinges which he describes as the hardest thing in box making , it may be on his web site , it is in the the instruction stuff i got with his package at the wood show ,ross

Tangram and Woodsurfer have given you a couple of good references to look at. Meanwhile, don't despair. Getting hinges onto small boxes is one of the things that many of us find very difficult. You will get better at it as you learn from experience too. Two things about the hinges on this box in particular. The hinges appear to need setting into the box a little. Each leaf should be set in just under a half of the thickness of the barrel of the hinge itself. Not enough recess and you will have a big gap at the back of the box like you have. Too deep and the lid won't close at the front. You will have to chop out accurate recesses for the leaf of each hinge. Do either the top or bottom first, fix the hinges, and mark the positions for the recess for the opposite leaf. The second thing about your box is that your hinges are too close together as Windsurfer also remarked. If your hinges are so close, even a small error at this distance will be about doubled by the time you get to the far end of the box. Hope you have more satisfaction with your next attempt, and keep us informed of any tips you can throw in for us.

This post is very timely.
I have been looking for small brass hinges for a while and finally found them through screw-fix here in the uk. I have just bought a bucket load.
I have been hinging my box's with a pivot through the lid into the carcas stock recently, but have a couple of box's that require brass hinges. I haven't done them yet and have been putting it off.. for all the reasons fencepost said.
So thanks for posting, it will be great to get your feedback as you go along.

the gifgins reference is in the dovetailed box plans book , i will try to scan the page to this site , i dont know if thats forbidden , but he seems to want to get people making boxes and just showing how to do it doesnt men instant success , ive hung lots of doors as a carpenter and its still a challenge for a top quality result , box hinges is way harder in that its scaled rite down , good luck, will try with the scanning etc, ross

If you check Rogers website you will find for ($29) Plans2 book for Dovetailed Boxes has 6 box plans as well as instructions on fitting of hinges in the appendix section.
Are you happy with your purchase of the Gifkins jig. Just wish I had more time in the day to actually get out and use it some more. Makes box making so much easier I thought.

While I was having a gander on The Gifkin website I noticed that Roger has a 15page free download on making and installing wooden hinges. Well worth looking at as he show diagrams for making jigs on cutting and fitting of hinges to your box
