Hinges - External Box
I'm building a chicken tractor with a nesting and roosting box out of 15mm external/marine ply.
Ths diagram shows the roosting box with the roof off. Not too worried about the roof. However, I am struggling with how to hinge the laying box so that:- The hinges don't deteriorate and,
- No weather can get into the box.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark, I can't really see how you can make the top of the laying box waterproof or weatherproof if you are having a hinged lift up top. Is it possible to have a hinged front panel for access to the laying box instead of a lift up top.? If so then it would be much easier to make the whole thing weatherproof. I guess brass hinges and screws would be the answer to prevent the hinges deteriorating. You could overlap the top roof of the box to add further protection from the weather.
Reality is no background music.

Hmmm. Couple of ways to go about it. I might be likely to try just using heavy duty brass hinges the way you usually would and then cover the entire length of the seam with a 4" strip of rubber. Just staple it every so many inches. Kind of like a roof vent. Running a bead of some weatherproofing compound on the underside before installing would further enhance it.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

I'd use a length of stainless piano hinge, which will save trying to screw into the edge of the ply. Then like Ciscokid, I'd reccomend covering this with something to keep the water out. I had an old timber and ply tool trailer with a similar set up and I used some vinyl from an upholsterer mate. I stapled it face down on the uphill side of the hinge and then folded it back over the staples and stapled it on the down hill side. Kept 99% of the rain out.
