What about the two screw slots (handle) that aren't running the same direction as the grain

Well, aren't you just the OCD hawkeye, rod 1949 Well spotted.

I had to make a decision here. Keep screwing into the black bean timber and risk shearing the soft brass screws off. Or the screws cmay have come through the inside of the box side if I kept going. Or keep rotating the screw and if it had reached the end of its travel in the handle hole, then wear out the grip into the timber. Or leaving them at right angles to the grain. The brass handles did not come with any steel ones to use as pilot screws.

My decision was informed by my previous experience putting the hinges on the lid, where I sheared off a steel #3 x 5/8" screw I used as a pilot before putting in the brass screws. Have a look below. I did not want to risk going there again, especially as putting the handles on was the very last thing to do before posting the box.

Incidentally, I could not make the bottom of the square hole flat with the chisel, so there was always going to be a pool of epoxy glue under the 10mm deep plug, which would not give much grip on the 5/8" long screws, so I put a 5mm tassie oak dowel 18mm long right down through the plug into the black bean of the lid, and glued it in to take the screws. Worked well.

OCD = obsessive compulsive disorder. In actual fact I should have said 'anal', that would have probably been a more accurate term Never mind, all said in jest

That is an absolutely stunning box! Where did you get the brass handles - very classy.

"My decision was informed by my previous experience putting the hinges on the lid, where I sheared off a steel #3 x 5/8" screw I used as a pilot"

Don't you just love it when these little challenges are thrown at you? Seem insurmountable at the time, and they certainly take plenty of time to overcome, but in the end you can prevail. You proved it!

The box arrived in Hurstville, NSW in very good time by Aust Post. Have to give credit where it is due.

My sister absolutely loves it, says it is perfect. She is not putting any knitting needles in it for a while, as she just wants to admire it, and enjoys taking the tray out and looking into the box Might have to offer to knock up a quick one from tassie oak or radiata pine for her to use

Will eventually get a pic of it in full use.
