    Default First Jewelry Box

Well here's the results of 4 or 5 days in the shed. This is my first decent try at boxmaking. Timber is Jarrah and Tassie Oak. Finish is Minwax gloss wipe on poly.

I made a few mistakes that aren't that obvious. Mainly a result of making up the design along the way and not planning things properly. All the joints are mitred so I also had a fair bit of trouble clamping things together for glueing.

It's also my first go at using quality timber. Prior to this I mainly played around with pine and meranti. The good stuff is so much easier to work with.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Nowhere near your standards yet NF and Munruben but I'll get there.

Shane, yeah I like wipe-on poly - very easy to apply and the results are always good. I do intend to give oil and wax a go on future projects to compare. I like your "swear box" on your web page - very nice timber and looks like it came up good in the end . Hey, I think you should name your company Skynet - sounds like Terminator stuff to me .

Very nice box. Well done. I really like the color contrasts.

By the way, on gluing up mitered corners on boxes, I've had a lot of luck just using masking tape and making several rounds around the top and bottom pulling it a little more snug each time. After all the joints are tight, square it up with a couple of cross pieces of tape until the glue sets up. No clamps and so far none of my boxes have come apart...yet.

Thanks Captain, yeah that's the way I ended up doing it. One of the problems I had was it was a very hot day and the glue was drying very quickly - I was barely able to tape it before it started to set.

For the lid I made up a frame slightly bigger than the lid and used small wedges to press it together as in the picture below. That worked ok but I couldn't do it for the box itself.

Hi Kev, Just a couple of quick observations. Most people when they look at a box ,the first thing is the hinges, I use solid brass hinges neatly fitted into both the lid and the base , 38mm with 3 screws is the norm, if they are not polished give them a go with Brasso.
Try and keep the lid just over vertical as this puts no strain on the hinges.
    regards John.

    G'day Bentley,

I 've bought quite a few things from this mob. They've always been good to deal with and very quick delivery.

    Regards, Kev
