Lid medallion recess
I’ve come across some medallions I’d like to recess into some box lids. They are 47mm but that’s without digital value or measurements just yet.
For the people that have made those ADF style boxes with medallions are there cutters you use that are variable spaced or just have a large enough collection forstner bits to suite all the range of potential recessing they need to do?
Cheers

I've seen a youtube video somewhere that shows how to make a router template for essentially any sized hole/recess you want to create. It starts with using a forstner bit to get close, then uses rebate bits with bearings of different sizes to get to the final dimension you want. Once you've created the template hole, use it with a router and create repeatable recesses for the medallions.
cheers,
ajw.

There are a number of ways to cut the recess,
- wood lathe with a set of cole jaws or large face plate to hold the work piece using a skew long point to scribe the outer then remove the waste with gouges / scrapers.
- Irwin adjustable auger bit with the cutting point nicely sharpened. Pilot hole may be an issue though on thin stock.
- Trammel cutter & bar to scribe the outer then use freehand router with shallow passes, and / or hand tools to remove waste.
- router with template as described above.

Great suggestions, I don’t have a freehand router with copy rings available but I do have cole jaws for my VL200. This could work nicely to test my chisel skill out
Next idea is finding an appropriate router with copy rings but yeah if I don’t have to spend $ to achieve this then I’ll try the lathe first
Thanks!

What size and thickness will the box tops be? How deep will the recess be required?

Haven’t made the box lids yet just in the planning stage so overall dimensions can adjust.
It’s actually a two sided presentation coin which I’m just using one side to present so overal it would be approx 7-9mm thick I’ll measure soon.
But I’ll be able to get a few actual medals soon which are one sided so will be more shallow recess.
I’ve just never tried to make this so wasn’t sure the most appropriate approach, the cole jaws approach I am most comfortable with and able to do without spending any further $. Unless I stuff up my selection of lids
Cheers
