    Default Mackay Cedar.

A couple of years ago I purchased a small slab of Mackay Cedar from Greg Ward and proceeded to resaw it into useful boards for boxmaking. About eighteen months later I decided to use it to make this Keepsake Box for one of my Grandaughters.
I needed to redress the the boards due to the cranky grain and finished with nice straight pieces about 13 mm thick.
This box is made to store the Programs from many live theatre productions and is quite large being 385 mm x 290 mm x 145 mm high. The lid insert is made from a sandwich of Curly Maple veneers and 6 mm plywood. The lid insert has been laser engraved with the classic Comedy/Tragedy masks.
I chose to make my own hinges from 10 mm black acrylic and I have also used black acrylic for all the corner feathers. These are all glued in place using a high quality two part marine epoxy. The pockets to house the hinges were routed into the back panel prior to the assembly of the box. This ensures absolute accuracy of the hinge fitting when the lid is cut off. The box is fitted with Brusso stays that take all the stress from the hinges when the box is opened. A brass mortice lock is fitted to complete the closure.
Unfortunately there was not enough Mackay Cedar to make the inner tray so I have used New Guinea Rosewood instead. The inlay of the initials was done using some very light coloured Mountain Ash and forms part of the lid in the tray.
The finish is Burnishing Oil with the usual wet and dry then steel wool followed by buffed wax.

And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Very nice, Ruddy. I also got some of the MC from Greg, and it does make nice boxes. Nice inlayed initials, too.

A very nice box Ruddy. Mackay Cedar is a good looking timber.
