Mahogany Box
This is starting to get a bit big for a box, but too small for anything else.
Some may remember a little while back an advertisement was posted for some small lengths of 50 x 50 african mahogany. Well I picked some up. Not having worked with mahogany before I decided to make a box. This is the result. The project grew a little like Topsy and therefore has a few "oops" in it due to design changes or poor planning.
Below are some progress photographs.Bob
"If a man is after money, he's money mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, he's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a never-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

1. This photo shows the mahogany being cut into 12 mm strips for sanding.
2. I found the mahogany did not like the thicknesser much so the drum sander was the way to go to avoid chipout.
3. The strips are now sanded and ready for glueup.
4. Three strips were glued together to give the required width.
5. Next was to make the drawers using the Gifkin jig.
6. The pieces are now ready for assembly.
7. Drawers assembled with the huon pine fronts cut for attachment.
8. The clamps are holding the huon pine false fronts during the glueup. The drawer runners are American walnut.Bob

9. Test fitting the drawers and planeing the runners for a smooth operation.
10. Cutting the tenons for the stand rails.
11. The finished stand (Blackwood).
12.This photo shows the two doors with floating panels of spalted sassafras.
The finish is wipe on polly finished with EEE.Last edited by BobR; 21st March 2008 at 12:37 PM. Reason: provided stand timber type

Box-cum-cabinet
That, my friend beautiful piece.!
It is a really simple design, and construction technique is likewise uncomplicated. The result though is a very artistic and well balanced object!

Lovely sculptural piece. And yes, it's stretching the definition of 'box'.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
