Thanks guys.
I did find a set of transfer punch for around $10 US at the local Harbor Freight. I'll have uses for them in other things that I build around the house.
I never heard of them before although I did see them and did'nt know what they were good for. These would have been handy for other items I was doing in the past.
There are a number of bits in the set small enough to use on the box hinges as well as for gate sizes hinges.

I find the easiest way to do it is with a countersinking bit. Approximately centre the countersink bit and drill down till the bit touches the hinge, then gently go down a bit further. Because the hinge is harder than the wood the bit will move sideways in the wood and 'self centre'. Then you will have a nice little dimple to start the drill in.
Always works for me.

I bought these self-centering drills, they work wonders!
