Marquetry attempt
Thought this marquetry lark can't be all that hard so got a book (The Marquetry Course) and had a go, practised a bit first though.
The box is made from some reclaimed Jarrah (railway sleeper) and the tray is Ash, lined with pigskin.

Great job
Hi Andy
Congratulations on a fabulous box, with the added bonus of a well executed inlay.
I'm very impressed.
Alan.

Very impressive indeed.
To be admired.....And my head I'd be a scratchin'

If I only had a brain.

Marquetry attempt
Thanks for the favorable remarks guys, I have seen some fabulous boxes on here and it is on here where I get my ideas from, I am striving to reach the standard of some of the boxes on here and hopefully getting there.

I hope that you think that you did a good job of the marquetry
because I think the rose is beautiful, right down to the leaf shapes.

Beautiful job on the Rose and the box is brilliant too .
Beginners question about the lid though, I've just finished my first box with a floating insert and I've been watching the gap increase and decrease with the humidity but I never see gaps in the boxes on the forum - what have I missed

Because of the tendency for thin wide pieces to do just that, expand and contract, I use ply or mdf with veneer on both faces, this solves a few problems, not least the expansion, but also it allows you to have lots of control over the look of the lid, obviously burr woods are expensive, hard to find and even harder to control in those proportions, I buy oddments of veneer on e-bay, large enough to cover the average lid size, and have built up a good collection over time which allows lots of choice and lets you play, the inside of the lid is also veneered with something plain but of a similar colour, you need to veneer both sides at the same time, not only for aesthetics, but to stabilise the ply or it will warp if veneered on one side only.
I should steer away from thin layers of wide wood because not only is it expensive but it doesn't make the job any easier.
Hope this helps.

Nice job on the box Andy, but the rose is superb, especially for a first effort.
Hope my first effort is half as good when I give it a go.

I like the box. I was wondering where you got the hinges from?
