    Default Miniature Piano Hinge

Hi gang, I've been following this box section for about 4 or 5 years now and haven't noticed any boxes done with a piano hinge. Or maybe I missed them. So recently I decided to buy 3 of these and see how they go. When you buy them they are 300mm in length, so need to be cut down to whatever you want.

These ones open up to in excess of 180 degrees, so some sort of a stop is needed. So I made up 3 identical boxes and this also gave me a chance to experiment with my new inlay kit.

I probably wont buy any more of these hinges, they are rather fiddly but I think the final result is rather neat.

Oops I forgot to add. The main timber used here is White Cedar. I have a stack of this, probably enough to make 100 of these boxes. Long story how I come by it, all for free.

Lovely timber to work with really. The more you sand it, it gets that lovely honey/gold look about it. And even a little bit of fiddle back creeps into it.

Nice result, they look good. Why would you not use the hinge again? Also where did you source the hinge.
I like the look of the hinge, compliments the design

    Hey there Dinosour,

I am pretty sure I bought them from Timbecon. About $11.50 each I think. I'll see how these boxes go if they sell. They were rather fiddly installing. Getting your distance from each end equal and then cutting the hinge and putting a curve on it to match the router cut. The stop block at the back works very good also.

Just that in comparison to those strap hinges that were mentioned in another thread, these piano hinges take much longer to install.

Sorry for delayed response Paul, but thanks for answering the question.
Not sure if it's appropriate to ask but have you sold any ?

    Hi Dinosour,

Yes the one with the heart has been sold for $140. I'll rethink on these hinges. I also bought a small piano hinge with a fixed opening of about 100 degrees. It's a lot more solid than these ones, I think it is 200mm in length. I must get around to using it to see how it goes. Got a few other ideas I am fiddling with at present, and also in the middle of another guitar build.
