Miniature Trinket Boxes
Hi all,
Not sure how many of you watch the Gifkin Col show every Sunday morning or not. Just before Christmas Col made a smallish box in his segment surrounding small boxes with simple hinges. I dont watch it live but manage to catch up with most episodes at a later stage.
I made the exact one that he made then thought I would reduce the height of it and make the length varying sizes. Just trying to put a few "cheaper priced" boxes onto my Etsy site and calling them miniature trinket boxes. Timber used is Bolly Silkwood and 150 year old Australian Red Cedar.
I have a mate down the road, who is also a keen woodworker, heaps more machinery and timber than I have. The other day he was telling me he is going to a family reunion in March, and a cousin who he hasn't seen for yonks will be there. A chap in his 80s. My mate wants to make him a box as a gift. He told me he wants the sides higher than the front/back. Only wants a pivot hinge, nothing fancy, and would love me to do some sort of a resin river in the lid.
So I am thinking this is exactly what these little miniature trinket boxes are, design wise. So I planned this out for my mate, but I also decided to make one for myself, as a bit of an experiment. I've got the box now already done. I've prepared some old live edge river oak, I'll do my resin pour tomorrow. End up doing a flood coat as well. Very keen to see how it all turns out. Hopefully pics of it down the track a bit.

Very attractive. Are they as small as they look? How thick is the stock?

Hi and thanks Dave. The sides/front are 9mm. Lid is 10mm. Brass rod is 3.2mm and the hole going into the lid section is redrilled to 3.5mm. There are 4 different size boxes, all of which are 90mm deep and 48mm high. Length of the 4 are, 96mm, 105mmn, 125mm and 148mm.
I might try and play around with these sizes to incorporate ring holders in each box, down the track a bit.

I had a go at them too but unlike you, I messed up. I made the front and back higher than the sides by mistake. They looked too nice to throw away so I just turned them 90° and ran the lid along the long direction rather than across the box and it still didn't look too bad. I made another couple after that and got one right that time and the other was wrong again, but with a different fault. Oh well, learn by your mistakes
I will be looking forward to see what you create in your lids. I'm sure it will be good.Dallas
