Another Last Minute Xmas Present
I got the great idea that the missus may like a jewellery box for Xmas, unfortunately I got the idea yesterday, I don't have a shed yet but I have a good mate that is setup for woodworking, so I asked him nicely if he could make a box up for me and I would engrave the lid.
So I can't claim the box as built by me but I did the work on the lid with my CNC router. Sorry the pics are a little blurry the camera was set to low resolution but you get the idea. Hope she likes it, a little too late to make improvements
Box is red Cedar with Cypruss Pine for the top of the lid.
For the CNC fans I used the trial version of V Carve, Mach Postprocessor and EMC runs the machine.
Cheers.
Russell.

The box is very nice. Your mate did a fine job. But, it is the lid that makes it in my opinion. Excellent work!

No Probs, I will help if I can.
Missus was suitably impressed with the jewellery box, was worth the effort

Russell, that has added more incentive for me to build my own CNC.
What an excellent example of its use!
Excellent box by the way.The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Cheers Tankstand
Even better is that all the software I used to make that was free, the trial version of V Carve did the program and I use EMC which runs the machine and is also free !
Of course the trial version of VCarve is limited but you get to try quite a few things which is great.

Great box and great lid Russell. Is that your first use of the software . I am totally ignorant of CNC but it certainly gives you a good result . It would take hours and hours to acquire the skills to hand carve something like that . What would it cost to set up and what is EMC.
Regards
PeterI've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Hi Peter, I have used this version of VCarve a few times, as I only have the trial version I can only do a few things but it certainly is a good indication of what can be done. I am saving for the full version but have to build a shed first...
It certainly does a better job than I ever would by hand, it is reasonably simple, I setup the job and ran it all in under an hour.
EMC is the software that runs the machine, it takes the code generated by VCarve or whatever you use to make the toolpath and actually runs the hardware. It is also free.
Cost is a big topic, I built my own machine and I guess I spent about $2000.00 bucks doing so, it was a steep learning curve but well worth it in my opinion. I also built my own electronics, most sane people spend a couple hundred bucks and buy commercially built drives but I chose to spend about 2 years of evenings learning what I needed in the electronics department.
Cheers.

Great job, very impressed with the lid. Do you have any more pics of the router? I'm interested to see how you managed to build your own machine to produce such fine results.
