Unfortunately or fortunately it was sold in quick time so now i have to make another.

The lid is an insert, i rebate the sides to the depth of the lid then glue the box together. Once dry i fit the lid to exacting tollerences and then bevel the edges 1-2mm so that only the sharp edge of the top is touching the box sides. I use plenty of glue to fill the cavity. For this box i beveled the top edges of the sides to just meet the lid.

I know i'm flirting with danger and the likely hood that one day a box will explode................ but until that day

Lovely timber, nice design, fantastic execution......I tips me lid sir !

Is the lid panel solid, or veneer on a ply substrate? I would have thought the latter would solve the movement problem, even if the veneers were the homemade fairly substantial (say 2mm thick) type? In my experience anything thinner than about 2mm and veneer loses the will to move and cause havoc...

Also what finish did you use on the box? It has brought out the colour and grain spectacularly ! I didn't really rate Jacaranda until I saw your efforts

The lid is a solid piece between 10-12mm thick from memory.

Finish is 2 coats of hard burnishing wipe on wipe off followed by a wax and a run under the buffing wheel.
