Oscillating Spindle Sander
Anyone use a oscillating spindle sander in box making? I have a chance to get one but not sure it’s needed. I have a belt sander plus disc Festool disc sanders.

Depending on the price, grab it and you'll find a use for it. I always seem to find a use for a gotta have tool!!!!
It all depends on the shape of the boxes you make, if they're just square ones, there's no need for it, but boxes with curves etc, it will come in handy, for doing the insides of curves. To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

Hi Puttn, I made my own spindle sander out of an old rather cheap drill press. I was using it for something it wasnt designed for and in the end the chuck kept falling off it. Motor etc worked fine. So when I bought a new drill press I pulled the old one apart, turned it upside down so to speak, so that the chuck faced upwards. Made a neat box for it and was able to obtain for free some old rubber sleeves and round sandpaper etc. So it cost me nothing. To answer your question the only time I use this spindle sander (it doesn't oscillate) is to make finger inserts for the bottoms of boxes so you can lift the lid up. (as opposed to making a handle on occasions). Just run the bottom of the box at an angle up to the spindle sander and it makes a nice little finger grip.
Apart from that I have never used it on any other box making. But, if I was to be able to buy one at the right price I probably would. I've used it on other things like guitar making.

I would love one to assist with bandsaw boxes ...... anything to assist and speed up sanding. For more traditional box making I would see too much use. If it’s a good price tools always find a use if you have the space.

They are not designed to take off lots of timber, only to gently finish curves. Otherwise the bobbin tends to distort in time and needs to be replaced, or the sleeves do not grip.

With soft timbers they are an extremely handy bit of kit. Harder timbers are still pretty slow going.
