Pen boxes

I was inspired by David at Timberbits to make up a couple of boxes to hold pens that I make. He has a series of videos on Youtube on how to make them from start to finish. He also had an article in the Australian Wood Review some time back on making them. I found some nice spalted Blackwood tucked away that I thought would look good and some Huon Pine for the lids, bases and supports. I was able to resaw the Blackwood so that I could wrap the grain around the boxes. I handcut some small splines on the corners and used 0.8mm Huon Pine splines but unfortunately the Blackwood is so figured they just blended in to the grain.
The second thing I wanted to do was try out Homey's use of Tru Oil. Thanks to his detailed instructions on how to apply it I think they came up okay.
I had a little bit of the Blackwood left over so I made up another little lift lid box to use it up and used English Ash for the lid.

Really nice work Dallas. They lift your pens to the next level.
I tried making one of those to David’s design, definitely didn’t look as good as yours.

Hi Dallas, very schmick indeed, they look great. I don't have a lathe so not into pen making. I have an old mate who plays bowls over at Sawtell, he makes heaps of pens and sells them to bowlers as he gets around the various clubs. I had a heap of burls that I had collected over a period of time. I was always going to make bowls with them, with one of those circular cutting tools you put on a 4 inch angle grinder,,..............but never did.

So I gave all the burls to this old mate, he was pretty grateful for them.

Interesting photo studio, front or back lawn? Hahaha. I was going to say your cloth needs a trim.

nice work. I'm often out at David's shop, I try to limit the vista as 1. It's a drive, 2. I can't just buy 1 thing, and 3. If I go out that way, I do a loop and drive back via McJings which costs me more money.

I can understand why your mate was pleased with his gift. Burls are always a sort after wood when it comes to pen making.

The Tru-Oil finish looks pretty good. In all a very nice box, well done.
