    Default Small piano hinge

Can anyone suggest the best place to get small piano hinges?

ive made a box for my brother in law to hold some radio gear, the sides of the box is 12mm thick and the box is about 500 x 350mm. It will be used quite a lot so I think the piano hinge will hold up better over time. Just not sure where to find piano hinge with a width under 10mm

No such thing exists to my knowledge, you will have to go with normal butt hinges

I got a piano hinge in the size you want at...Bunnings.

What about using Quadrant hinges, or 95 degree stop hinges?

    Regards,

    Rob

Given that you're almost certainly looking at shipping ...

Lee Valley has Brass plate Piano hinges, 16 x 780, 20 x 780 (open width by length) along with other sizes -- and of course you, have normally trim a piano hinge them to length
IME, LV's shipping is super fast and not too expensive for lighter weight items

    Hi,
Try Piano Hinges | Hinges | Goods & Chattels
They are a fantastic source for many goodies.

The 90 degree stop hinges sold by McJing, Lee Valley and Goods and Chattels all come from the same Taiwanese manufacturer, they make a huge range of solid brass and plated box hardware. These hinges actually open to about 95 degrees. If you decide to use this type of hinge I would suggest you use two of the solid brass ones in either the 115 x 9mm or 200 x 9mm size. The 200 x 9 is the size I've used on the box in the attached pic. and that box has 11mm sides.

I have used some Goods and Chattels hinges and the Bunnings hinges. The ones I purchased all seem to be pressed-steel and brass plated rather than solid brass (not the ones Aldav talks about). The G&C hinges seem better than the others, but there is not much in it. Big Shed's suggestion of the solid brass hinges sound good if you are prepared to cut and drill the screw holes as well as having a lot of hinge left over. You would really need a drill press for accuracy. That is fine if you want to make more, similar boxes.

I collect antique boxes and the hinges that have proven the test of time are solid brass butt hinges. So, if you are looking for longevity then I would use those. The small pressed-steel, bass plated piano hinges seem very flimsy in comparison.

Anton Gerner in Melbourne Gerner Hinges sell superb hinges.

    Good luck

    David

Closed ian. Because they only open to about 95 degrees you can't open them out, if you could they'd be around 15.5mm wide. The barrel is around 2.5mm and each leaf about 6.5mm excluding the barrel.

    Cheers.
