POLL - Rounded corners or Sharp/crisp
I am in the process of another box and was hoping to run a poll, on who prefers rounded or Sharp crisp corners? now I know that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but I haven't made 2 identical boxes that i could do 1 with crisp corners, and anther with rounded over corners to compare against each other. And I also understand it would depend on the a lot of factors, style of box, colour, corner joints, mitred/dovetailed/finger jointed etc.
for instance the round-over will be 2mm, on all 12 edges, soft but more than just a hand sand take the edge off.
just happy to hear people thoughts on the subject.

Hi Fumbler,
My vote is for crisp squared corners. Possibly a small chamfer (small) around the top and around the bottom. The bottom one gives a ‘shadow line’ that helps delineate the box from whatever it is sitting on.
If you look at boxes from the quality boxmakers (I’m thinking Andrew Crawford, Peter Lloyd, Ian Hawthorne, Doug Stowe, Robert Ingham) there is seldom, if ever, a rounded corner. Curved tops, yes. Curved sides, yes.
None of this means a thing if you like rounded corners, of course. As you say, beauty is in the eye etc., but me, I confess to being a bit of a square!
Good question - I look forward to seeing what others prefer!

Rounded can mean as little as 1/16" round with a router bit, or some fine sandpaper on a sanding block. I do a soft round over on all pieces apart from those joining another.

Not rounded corners, but just soften the edge slightly so it's not razor sharp.

If both boxes are the same i would do 1 of each with the round being as the others have said, just 2mm around the outside edges but not on meeting edges.

I didint make 2 boxes. But due to the nature of the timber I was using whereby you get a splinter and tear out from just looking at it, I decided to lightly sand then use a small Japanese round over plane I bought last year from the wood show. Gently does it and it has turned out spectacularly. I will post pics when done.

I love the feel and look of my boxes when they have super crisp corners/edges but I inevitably knock them off with a quick rub of sandpaper before finishing just to avoid splintering when they get knocked about during use. If the punters were going to take great care with them I would leave them sharp but I like to think they will be put to frequent use so that the corners will end up being naturally rounded.
