Default Next project - can't help myself

Got a question to all those who use veneer..... or those that don't but might know the answer.

i want to partially veneer box walls, what are the rules, will my timber bow? Would I be better off inlaying the piece in? It will cover about 1/3 of the box wall. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag too early by putting up plans.

does the thickness of the veneer matter? Ie would I be better off gluing 2 pieces together and then running over the jointer (if bowed) then through the thicknesser?

i know it's not much to go on but I did hear a general rule, do the same to the other side but I don't really want to be veneering inside. Better still would I be best to construct the box then put the veneer on and if so, will the lid warp once separated?

hopefully I have made sense, it does to me but then again I know what I'm trying to make........ yikes!!??

You’re right that the general rule is if you veneer one side you should veneer the other. I’ve seen a 9mm ply board end up like a banana with only a 0.6mm veneer on one side.

    How thick are your veneers?

If the veneer is 0.6mm and only covers one third of the box wall you might be OK if your walls are strong (I’m thinking 12mm plus). However, I’ve never veneered one third of a box

Homey, thank you. Probably 2 or 3 mm thick on an 8-10mm wall. I also had 30mm block of Jarrah bend up as I applied a thin layer of glue sticking 4mm blackbutt strips on, even with huge clamping pressure. So I may have to rethink how it all goes together.
