    Default Question-Loose Lid Top

I have a box built that is 5 1/4" wide x 7 1/4" long. I want to put a loose lid top on it similar to the one Roger Gifkins has on his web site. My question is how do you figure how much longer and wider to make the lid?

Is there a quick way to decide or just trial and error?

    Thanks for any reply.

    David,

It really depends on the look your after. If the box has no base that protrudes from the sides somewhat, then and overly large lid that hangs over the sides might not look right. In that case you might consider making it flush to the outside edges or maybe just an 1/8th inch overhang and detailing this overhang someway...chamfer, , radius on the underside, roman ogee on the upper surface, etc. I presume your going to make the lid fit into the box, say maybe a 1/4 inch down on the inside so the lid stays on.

Anyway, that's why boxes are fun, they can be anything you want them to be.

    ICN,

    Bill

Or you can even make the lid slightly smaller like I've done here.
