Dave, I just thought I'd mention, they're brass-plated and not solid brass, hence the low price.

You can get the solid brass equivalent here, but they're a bit lot dearer, at $25.40 a pair:
Solid Brass Hinges Fine without Stay 35mm x 6mm - Veneer Inlay

I'm cheap, so usually go for the plated ones.

    Wow thanks for that mate.

Definitely a nice finish at a better price.
Now I don't even see what's so special about the smart hinge? It was just the first hinge I saw of this style.

And it was the first made. They have the design costs.

When they say solid brass " WITHOUT STAY", does that mean these will not stop at 90 degrees?

I'm not sure, but think they probably stop at 90 to 105 degrees. The plated ones from Carroll's stop at 105 degrees, but I've never bought the solid brass ones from Veneer Inlay Australia, so couldn't say for sure.
Perhaps someone else can help here. Otherwise, an email to Michael at Veneer Inlay would soon answer your question.

    Hey guys

I used the above techniques by making a false bottom. It's definitely the way to go, so thanks all, appreciate all you advice. Really am learning loads.

The only problem I had was cutting the card square, so ended up using thin ply and using the table saw.

So that being said, any advice on making the card square? And a perfect fit.. My scissor skills aren't what they used to be in primary school haha.

Seems like the easy part but it really wasn't. I would also in future mark the card template before glueing in the bottom ( one mistake that made it hard).

I'm hopeless with scissors too. Rather than scissors, I use a hobby knife, (scalpel type), and a steel rule to guide it when cutting card.

For marking out, a cheap plastic set of student's geometry tools is handy. ie. Compass, dividers, protractor, set squares. Mine cost under $5 at Woolworths.
To cut on, one of the 'self-healing' cutting mats is worth buying.

As well as for box linings, I find that 0.5mm cardboard is also very useful for making patterns/templates.

The smart hinge will hold your lid open at 90deg....the others will not and the lid could drop back and tear out your screws.

Have a look at these from master box maker Ian Hawthorne,

Of the 'others', the unplated ones from Carroll's will not do this at all. They have a built-in 95 degree stop.
I suspect that the solid brass ones from Veneer Inlay Australia would be the same in that regard too.

I just bought 5 pairs from:
    Hardware for Creative Finishes
    P.O. Box
    Dungog NSW 2420
    PH. (02) 4992 3068
Of their brass plated, polished Strap Hinges with stops 6mm x35mm open to 105° with screws for $8.64 a pair.

I hope they work pretty good. Thanks for the tip. (I have not received them yet)
