Default Two questions- Where to get smart Hinges? And... lining a box?

    Hi Guys,

Where do you get smart hinges in Australia? Or do you have to order them from the UK?

Also, I am making what I would say is my first nice box, that so far is coming together much more nicely than the 2 prior.

That being said how do you line the box with material ( felt/silk?) I imagine PVA glue would make it gluey and not for a smooth finish. What material do you use. At this stage I only plan to line the base of the box which is 6mm ply in a dado.

    Hello, Hello,

You have to order the Smart Hinges from the UK

As far as lining the bottom of your box, try some self adhesive felt from Jim Carroll.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Linings...

If you want to use felt you can glue it straight on with PVA; just don't press hard with your fingers; use a flat piece of board slightly smaller than the base. Thin glue coat only!

    Or...

Double sided tape; DIY self adhesive felt backing

    Or...

Use a false bottom made from thin card; fold the felt around that and glue to the back only. Then afterwards you can glue the bottom in place.

    Or...

As above but with silk or velvet

    Or...

As above but glue a thin layer of foam rubber onto the card first so you get a cushion effect

    Or...

Use flocking powder; coat the area with glue, throw in the powder, shake it all around. Tip out the excess and the job's done.

    Default Scorching smarthinges

    Wow, the price is premium.

    $54 a pair.

Im not doubting they are a quality item, but its hard to believe someone else doesn't make a quality hinge that doesn't cost so much.

I think the pair I bought a year or so ago were $70/pair. They are a bit cheaper now.

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you glue silk of velvet directly to the wood? What effect will this have?
When you say a false bottom made of card, exactly what do you mean? Have the 6mm ply wood then then glue the card to the ply with preglued silk or velvet?

I just use cardboard from cereal boxes or similar.
Cut the card about 1mm smaller (for velvet) than the base of the box and cut the cloth about 20mm bigger each side.
Spray the top of the card with aerosol craft glue and press it on to the back of the cloth as well centred as you can get it.
Cut the corners off the cloth at about 45o, almost to the corners of the card.
Spray the back of the card and cloth then fold the edges of the cloth over and press them down.
Flip it over and press it into the box - job done!

    I use this method for a couple of reasons . . .
A: If you stuff it up you haven't affected the box and can start again.
B: It looks very tidy and professional - no rough edges etc.
C: I'm basically lazy and it's very quick and easy to do it this way.

Pretty much covers it; I haven't used spray on glues but expect they would be perfect for this application, especially for silk. That or very carefully cover the card with thin double sided tape.

    Thanks guys,

Am trying the aerosol method as I write this,

But alas, the felt "bubbles" up like it does not stick. What brand craft spray do you use?

Can't figure why the felt wouldn't stick with it?!
I'll have a look in the shed tomorrow - the one I've been using was just a cheapie from the $2 joint . Got a brand name can ready for when it runs out.

I bought a dyed goat skin from eBay, $15 with $6 postage. It is 1mm thick.

I think it will make a decent lining but I was wondering how I was going to do the sides and base in one go. It looks like I will be wrapping it around some card and fitting it together in pieces.

The last velvet lined box I made was done with thin ply and glued the lining to the ply. I used hot melt glue and it sticks really well to fabric. You could do it in one go if you make a cardboard template making sure to leave about a 2mm gap where the sides fold up. Cover the cardboard with the lining using hot melt glue then slip it in and hot melt glue just the top edge by lifting away slightly and do small sections at a time. You could maybe also put a bit of glue in the bottom but you have to work quickly.

Here's another much cheaper source of 6mm x 35mm strap hinges. $9.50 a pair. You can rout the recess for them just like with a 'Smart' hinge. I use them a bit. (Carroll's are also a sponsor of the forums.)
There's a pair on the little box in the pic below.

For my linings, I use 0.5mm cardboard or 2mm plywood for the panels, then wrap them using self-adhesive felt from Spotlight and push them into place. I've found that if I want to glue the finished panels in place normal or spray contact adhesive makes the original adhesive backing on the felt let go, so I use a thin smear of epoxy, (Araldite), to hold the panels in place.
Pretty hard to mess up and it comes up nice and neat.
