Hi all,

After viewing some of the fine work posted here I'm a little nervous about posting this, but I'm confident you'll all be nice

This is my first lidded box, made to hold an engraved vase that I'm presenting to my parents for the Golden Wedding anniversary (this weekend). It was built up solid and then split into top and bottom on the table saw. The top panel was deliberately inserted sitting proud of the sides to give me enough room inside for the payload. To hide that (and add a bit of interest), I cut a wide, shallow chamfer all around the top as you can see. The photos also show the box sitting on one of my previous projects, a coffee table with an inset, glass topped display box.

Anyway, looking forward to any comments, good or bad.

Is the timber jarrah?

G'day Dominic,
Looks pretty good to me, and I reckon the "olds" will just love it.
A comment:
Did you round over the bottom edges of the box, as I can't tell from the photos???
Some "boxers" recommend doing this, as it separates the box from the surface it rests on.
Picky, Picky old bugger aren't I???

It is very very classy, style is kinda "Worthy", I'd say. That kind of box is very alluring, inviting to open it to see what it keeps. Well done, indeed

I'm only new to woodworking, but I hope my first box comes out even half as good as the one you have made. Keep it up & I hope to see more pics in the future of anything else you make.

Thanks very much for the kind welcome & comments. Answers to a few questions:

Shane, the timber isn't anything exotic - just plain old Tas Oak, chosen because I had a 1800x135x12 plank in the corner of the workshop (left over from the project attached below). The stain is a Wattyl Cedar and a few coats of satin Estapol. BTW, I notice you're in Hahndorf. I'll be down that way at the end of October for the Clubman Nationals (see http://www.clubbiessa.com/clubbie_nationals.shtml for more on that).

Noel, I didn't round over the edges as I was going for a square edged formal look. That said, if I was doing another I might try something along those lines. Boxes are new for me but I'm getting enthusiastic about doing more
