Thread: Red cedar and Silky oak medal box

I've been flat out over the past week and had no time to get this box finished. I'm almost done now. ....

I managed to find a small piece of huon pine for the tray supports. These sit inside the box to support the tray. I usually cut a groove in the inside of the box and insert a small strip to support the tray. But the owner of the box likes huon pine (who doesn't?) and wanted me to include it where possible.

I used my shooting board to fine tune the fit. It was nice to do some hand tool work after using predominantly power tools so far on my rocker build.

Then I started rounding over the tray supports with a high angle smoother. I was almost done and ready to put a sanding sealer coat on when I was called up to look after my daughter.... so I need to find more time this week. I want to deliver the box next week so I might have to stay up late one night.

Tell me about it.... I've been trying to finish it for a while and I keep getting close then parent duties come up.

The photos doesn't show it that well, but there's some nice figure throughout the cedar. I'm looking forward to that first coat of oil.

Waiting for the finished itrm . I like that combination of timbers.

Sack the kids and get on with it!

Looking forward to the completion of this great box (but the chair was a great disruption),so far very nice and I also think the grain will jump with some finish.

Almost done! the box is sanded and ready for a sanding sealer coat. I just got to wait for the lid pull to dry.....I'm pretty excited to see how it looks when the finish is applied.
I really like this box and wish I was keeping it. This is the problem I have with making things for other people.

The first medal box that I made, which is my personal box, is about 4 years old and is now overdue for another coat of oil. So I'll be bringing it down to the workshop and applying another coat when I oil up the cedar box.

That timber is stunning. I can't wait to see a finish on it.

Nah it takes at least 2 weeks to dry....

but seriously, spare time is ridiculously rare these days!

The box is now fully sanded and ready for finishing. I applied a sanding sealer coat yesterday and hoped to apply the first coat today, but of course I had no time....

The medal box is finished now. I applied the last coat of livos kunos oil over the weekend and I'm very happy how it turned out. I really like the livos oil, I've been using it now for almost 5 years and it never disappoints.

It's a pretty crap photo but I'll post a pic once I put it together. Cheers

That grain certainly "popped" with the oil. Which actual Livos kunos product did you use? Their site shows a number of Livos kunos oil products.
