Hey mate,
The lid is a frame and panel design with a tongue cut on all four sides of the panel (silky oak) which then sits in a groove around the frame. Both the frame and panel are the exact same thickness.
The frame is joined with dominoes, but you could also do a bridle joint or mortise and tenon. I really like the look of the frame and panel for a lid. There's nothing wrong with a mitred frame, I personally like this look better and it's what the customer wanted also.
The pic below should make it a lot clearer.
Cheers

Thanks for this information, Andy, it is very helpful for my next box. Another case of a picture worth a thousand words. Nice bit of workmanship getting the tongue and grove exactly right, and allowing for expansion of the panel.
One advantage of that type of frame over the mitre jointed frame is that it is far more suited to the strap hinge you use, in that the tiny corner point of the outside of the mitre joint tends to break away when the slot for the strap hinge is being cut. It becomes quite unsightlyregards,

Beautiful boxes - great wood, great design, perfect dovetails - what's not to like.
