Red Oak and QLd Silver Ash box
Hello, have just finished a box as a gift for a friend. Didn't quite make Christmas 2016, as intended
I was given the timber by Mobyturns who got it from John Goyne, a sawmiller in El Arish, just north of Tully, FNQ (see John.G on this forum). The idea was to showcase the beautiful Caledonian / Red Oak timber (Carnarvonia Araliifolia) which only grows in the Tablelands area of FNQ. It is very much like Northern Silky Oak, but with a red colour and beautiful grains. I thought this would be best done by using a plain grain Qld Silver Ash board for the sides.
The red oak grain is amazing, changing colour with the angle of the light, and in many cases has a 3D appearance.
The box is made using the golden ratio for the dimensions ( 253 x 156 x 97) and looks quite natural. It is finished with 3 coats of Livos Kunos #244 eco-oil
The hinges are 35 x 6mm strap hinges from Goods and Chattels in Brisbane

I have used Red Oak before on a box for my wife, found here : Huon Pine Utility Boxregards,

I bet you must be pretty impressed with yourself with regards to the fit between the lid and base. It almost doesn't show up in the photos. Fantastic job.

Thanks Kuffy, one of my better ones, or should I say luckier ones. I always find it a bit of hit and miss, requiring lots of sanding to align. Often I find the sides of the lid expand or contract immediately after the lid is cut away from the box

It is some nice wood, and some exceptional workmanship to bring it to life on your behalf. I separated it away from the other thing which kinda overawes it and its a gem in its own right.... simple and elegant - very very elegant. I like it a lot.
Going to be interesting to see what you pull on next for a challenge. Your skills with the detail work becomes more impressive with each project for sure.

Joe, excellent work on the box. When John gave me a few extras to go with a purchase of timber I knew that this piece was way to nice to be cut up into small bits as I would most likely have done. So glad to see that you have showcased it well. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your next project with the silver ash.

Nicely done Joe....
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

We still do. Its "too heavy" for cabinetry/ joinery work in FNQ - home of the worlds most spoilt cabinetmakers - and unknown/ unavailable everywhere else. And if you haven't got enough log to pull out 2000 linear of flooring then its not worth putting into that, and log supply is too erratic for that. Besides its "too busy" for a floor.(actually ive seen one and its incredible but not for small rooms)
That leaves backsawn F17H3 framing.
That pack of 2" quarter cut I did last time you were up is still lying here gathering dust. Shame... I reckon she'd make one hell of a formal dining suite or three.

I might have to get some red oak and silver ash from you when my piles of timber diminish.
