Thread: End result for Large Rosewood Jewellery Box

Great job Paul. Lovely timber and you've shown it off to its best mate.

(Bet there is a few dollars of timber in there. I made a little puzzle box that was in the last Woodsmith, thought I'd go for an exotic which i did - $30, gulp)

Anyway, really cool job, I haven't tried something quite like that yet, building up the courage

I like the drawer. It sure is a real challenge to get that right. Id be interested to hear how you did it.

With the insert, was it online? Do they sell them as a range?

Hi and thanks all, I have/had a fair bit of rosewood, all purchased from Boutique Timbers and I really wanted to use a lot of it up. All varying sizes. To cut out that drawer face, obviously you want to make a very neat job and there is no chance you will have the inner piece left over. I cut the rectangle hole on my home made router table (made it from the plans on the gifkins site), love it. I have 2 fences, (long and short), that pivot from a central point. (2 points). I use stop blocks so my cut is an exact distance in length. The cutter I used here was a 5/32 spiral bit, lifting it higher and higher till it goes all the way through the timber. (I also use this cutter for slicing off lids). So by some accurate placing of stop blocks and doing this 4 times, the cut for that drawer was very neat. Just needed a tad of filing to square off the round corners.

I matched the drawer face as well as I could with other rosewood. For the framing of the drawer, I'll take a couple of pics of the under frame tomorrow, for you to look at.

The inserts I bought from aliexpress.com.

I just looked and can't see that exact one, I think they swap their stock around a bit. The quality is okay, not brilliant.

Thanks fellas, woodPixel was interested in how I went about that drawer. I took a few more pics today, its pretty simple framing really. All done in rosewood, except for the shelf for that upper insert to sit on. I just used 6mm mdf for that, you can't see it and its nice and flat. I created a little ledge for that to sit on.

The trick to start with is, cut a couple of lengths of timber and slot a small shelf into that. For the drawer runner. Make sure that you come in a couple of mil on each side to give the drawer front something to hit on to, to keep it flush with the box. Like this -

Then I just run a couple of upper runners across, to stop the drawer from flopping down upon opening.
