Rosewood Box.
At the last Sydney Wood Show I bought what looked to be an interesting piece of Rosewood from Greg Ward. Being the gentleman that he is, he only charged me $40 and he swore that he would record the sale with his best mate Wayne Swan.
I cut it up to make some boxes and this is the first result. I managed to make this box from one slice from the original.
Throughout the wood, it has what looks like water stains and when polished it shows what Mother Nature can do. Thanks Greg for a lovely piece of wood.
The finger lift is Red Mallee burl and there is a built in stop to hold the lid at 90 degrees when open. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Ruddy thats as said a nice design reminiscent of Art Deco period well thought out.
Is the Box sides Silky? and the inner sections Sassafras? or Huon?

Rosewood
I think rosewood is the best timber to work with.
And old rosewood has the best colour.
That colour is not from water.
It comes from fresh growth on a tree that has been damaged, so it has almost a cloud like appearance as the new growth (over many many years) wraps around dead or damaged timber.
Great job, I am always amazed at what designers, artisans and architects can make from what to me is simply a nice piece of timber, or a bare block or ground or an old house, some of us have no style, but we can appreciate those who have it.

Alex, the box was finished with about 5 coats of Miniwax satin WOP. Between each coat the box was polished using 600 grit and after the final coat polished with wax.
Ray, all the externals are Rosewood. The internal sides of the box are Blackwood and the trays are made from some Pacific Tallowood.
I only had a small piece of the Tallowood but it had some great contrasting grain lines along its length. This is a better picture of what the Tallowood looks like. And my head I'd be a scratchin'

Love the timber - love the box

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Very nice indeed!! Might have to borrow (steal!!) some design features.
I'm not young enough to know it all.
