That is a lovely box mate. Absolutely love how it looks with the ripples.

May I ask how you did the frame and panel lid? Is it just a tongue and groove frame and panel with an inlay around the panel?

As someone who still calls themselves a novice, I love to learn tips and tricks and new techniques each time I see a lovely box.

    Thanks

    Andrew

Thanks for your complements Andrew....the panel lid is done as a mitred picture frame with the added bead already glued before mitreing, the corners having a small biscuit joint and the insert is fitted then rubbed glued before clamping....I sometime use a small biscuit joint to secure the insert in as well.
    I hope that this helps.

    Thanks Kerry,

May I ask specifically; in regards to fitting the insert-- Is the frame of the lid rebated so the panel sits in the rebate and sits flush with the frame? Or is it more tongue and groove where the frame has a groove and the panel a tongue that fits?

Frame and panel lids are something I have not quite mastered!!

    Kind Regards,

    Andrew

Hi Andrew, for the Sassafras box the infill is exactly the same thickness as the frame. When I use an insert of a different thickness I usually use a " "Gifkin" semi round router bit to make a feature tenon, as per attached photos. You might like to check out the Gifkin U-Tube instruction that give detailed info......Regards Kerry

    Thanks Kerry,

I have a gifkins jig and box making set as well find using the bits to make a feature tenon easy enough. I just always wondered how to make a frame and panel where the panel is flush with the frame as per your sassafras box! Thanks very much for your advice....so its really as simple as making panel the same thickness as the frame and glueing it in!!? I always assumed it must sit in a rebate!

I really need to get some more box making books and do some more reading . I may start another thread at some point regarding lid inserts as there is so many ways to do it.

Thanks again and it is a beautiful box!

    Cheers

    Andrew

That's lovely. I have a small piece of Sassafras that I'm trying to make a trinket box from for my next anniversary. Can I ask how you finished that one? The last time I finished some sassafras with french polish it ended up very dark and in my opinion lost a lot of it's beauty.
