    Default The Sassafrases

The market goers swoon all over this Sassafras and whenever i make a box from it it sells quick smart.
The Black heart veneer is glued to 12mm MDF while the White Sassafras trims and trays and handle are solid.
I have now found that MDF is the best medium for veneering one side only and have found that keeping weight on it until I'm ready to cut it ensures that it bows only slightly and does not cup and given this i was able to make this box at 260 x 140 x 135 with little waste.
All joins are mitred and each corner matches perfectly and the hinges are Chrome plated strap. The finish is the usual HBO with Ubeaut wax.

Just a warning about the hinges for that size of box. I used the same type of hinge but the customer later phoned me and said they had broken. It seems there is too much pressure on the rather small strap hinge when the lid is opened. I had to replace the strap hinges with quadrant hinges, which are more expensive and much trickier to install. In future I will only use the strap hinges on small boxes.

Lovely colours there - very nice job I would have thought that the strap hinges were fine, although I'd want to use longer than the standard screws to mount them on a box that size?

I guess the only customers not keen on Sassafras are those with a lisp?

I always attach a care and maintenance sheet with all boxes that includes a be gentle reminder. I hope there won't be a problem because the box was bought by a UK customer.

Very nice box double.d I've had some thoughts on hinges lately. I have decided to use those strap hinges for my usual size boxes which are up to 250x150 and have 10mm sides. I like the 250x150 for various reasons, one is I can clean up the initial frame easy on my belt sander with a 150mm belt.

But for my larger boxes which will be about 300 x 185 (adhering to the golden ratio still), I intend to use Andrew's smart hinge. I purchased half a dozen pairs from him recently. I will use 12mm sides for these boxes which is needed for Andrew's 8mm hinges. They are beautiful hinges I must admit.

Here is my recent Sassafras box with those hinges.

    Nice work Paul.

Who is Andrew and why are his hinges so good?

Andrew Crawford SmartHinges, I presume. Expensive, but worth it for quality boxes.
Will be visiting him in July.

Thanks double.d And yes Alex, correct. I purchased 6 of his pairs of hinges, they are pretty brilliant, solid brass, 8mm across by 3mm thick, and much longer brass screws also (than the strap hinge).

The hinges with postage worked out at $50 per pair. I made 3 of these boxes all identical to try them out. The other two boxes were from Snakewood, and Tassie Blackwood.
