    Default Scrap wood box

Purchased some black walnut a while back for some built-in bookcases I was doing. Some of the boards that I purchased had large splits up at one end where the tree either went into a crotch or a large limb branched off. There is usually some pretty good figuring in these stressed areas, but checking and splits are very common as the timber dries. I hated to see these split areas go to waste so I came up with this.

The butterflies are quartersawn sycamore, the sides are quilted hard maple, and the lift is ebony. Hope you all like the idea.

awesome. I love the mismatched sized butterflies, meandering along the split (sudo randomly). Brilliant, and as I was chastised once before there is no such thing as scrap. this just goes to prove that theory.

    Well done.

Ciscokid, can I ask how you got the bevel on the lid? Did you make a jig to slice on that angle? I am looking at doing the same for a smaller box I am making. It won't be as pronounced as yours though.

    Very nice box sir..

BUT I must take exception to calling such beautiful timber offcuts SCRAPS...

No such thing a scrap wood IMHO, just offcuts awaiting a use!!!!

Sorry for the late reply. I set my table saw blade to 20 degrees from vertical and carefully ran the board on it's side down the fence.
