Scroll boxes - World Masters Games
My most recent commission was to design and make five scroll boxes, to contain the athletes' oath for the World Masters' Games, on at present in Sydney. Preparation of the design involved about six ideas and sketches, and a model in pine of the most likely.
It became a bit of a rush job, because of delays in accepting a final design, the growth of the commission from two to five boxes and the timing - the laser etching had to be fitted in during the engravers busiest week, the end of the football season when they had hundreds of trophies to engrave.
The boxes are in Sydney Blue Gum and Australian White Beech with satin lining. The stands are in Australian White Beech. The boxes are removable from the stands, and are held in place by rare earth magnets. It is intended that successive host cities will have the logo of their games etched on the stands.
From acceptance of the design to delivery was 4 weeks, including a week when I had a prior commitment away from the workshop. Fortunately, the engravers were able to do their work during that week. The scroll spindles were turned by Terry Gleeson, and the calligraphy was done by Julie Williams on calfskin vellum.
Three of the boxes were presented to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Kai Holm, the retiring President of the International Masters Games Association and the World Masters Games board of Governors. One box will be passed on to the next city to host the games, Turin, and future host cities, and the last will be retained by the NSW Government.

Fantastic!
What a story to tell the kids! To have your work held and admired by such dignitaries and spread around the world!
You must be so proud!
No pressure then?
How many more were in the batch run as back ups?The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Thank you all for the kind comments.
I was chuffed to get the job, especially as my daughter was competing (her teams took out a gold & silver in Canoe polo).
I didn't do a backup box, but I did do some backup pieces such as staves and ends, and a practice base in pine.
Here are some better quality pictures.

They're wonderful Alex, congratulations!
Shame there wasn't a spare... would have been nice to have an extra one aside for you to keep...

Superb job, Alex. Really exciting!
And congrats to your daughter. I've never heard of canoe polo before, but it sounds like fun!

The best praise is doing something you love and seeing it out there. The real buzz is not necessarily receiving recognition for it, but to know that you have been involved and it's your work that so may people will come in contact with it.
Well done Alex.

Yeah, I don't know Alex. They look like a bit of a rush job to me.
I reckon they would have been much nice if they were turned rather than coopered. Still they did the job.
Did you use wipe on poly for the finish, or Danish Oil?
