Sculpted Box
This sculpted box is constructed from meranti with NSW Rosewood and unknown timber top. It is finished with a single coat of wiped-on, thinned polyurethane polished to dry with rottenstone before light staining with dark tan boot polish and a final finish coat of hard wax.
The interior contains a drop-down holder for in-use coloured pencils etc as the box is purpose-made for a small selection of art materials.

That is absolutely beautiful, and a ton of work put into it also. Super job.

That's a beauty!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Beautiful box, nice to see the freestyle shape it flows very well. I think there is a good chance the top timber is white cedar very typical grain pattern.

David, was your mitre saw broken that day, had to change tack perhaps? Hahaha, that's a beaut, very creative indeed.

Thank you Alex. Not cedar, just meranti. I know that doesn’t mean much meranti coming in so many kinds. But every now and then you find a nicely figured piece which is almost always warped and twisted and has apropensity to tear out as well. Therefor a box lid shaped and formed in submission to the twisting and warping is the answer.
I am a carver rather than box-maker and so I construct the box with the simplest possible construction into an inelegant blocky thing that looks like a reject brick that any modification at all can only improve. Then with carving tools or maybe just a sharp chisel, certainly a rasp and 80 grit paper I shape the thick-walled holly block according to whim.
Apart from an eye for fair curves, the stubborn tenacity to work from 80 grit to 1200 and beyond and a tested finishing technique, it is a simple project compared to most hand-crafted boxes that comprise expertly fitted joinery.

Oops, I just stated that the top was meranti, but I was thinking of another sculpted box I had made with all meranti. I didn’t know the timber I used for the top of this one, only knew it wasn’t red cedar, white cedar sounds right. These sculpted form boxes are all I am capable of until I learn and use proper techniques with well prepared timber.
