Sharpening Box
Had a bit of time in the workshop on the weekend and ended up building a little box for my diamond plates.
Been one of my first boxes, what do you think? I like the look of the thing but I don't know about my workmanship. One or two of the dovetails have a gap on the sides of about a hair. Would you say that I am been too hard on myself or should I try harder to get them tighter? I am not sure where the error came from but I guess it was just movement while routing.
Slight mistake on the top too. I put magnets under the redgum trim and hit one while routing the chamfer

Thanks for the feedback guys. I normally am on the harsh side on myself. My grandfather was a fitter and turner so gaps of .1mm are huge when you talk to him and I guess that just sort of rubbed off on me.
Realistically, at what point do you say "that's fine" for errors? I know we all would like to have dovetails 100% perfect but to err is human
Second question, where do you all buy brassware from? The stuff at Bunnings is rubbish. The hinges I used came from carbatec but they don't really have much of a range there.
Thanks

Beautiful box. Hope it's good and strong, there must be quite a bit of weight in those diamond plates. The corner post double dovetails are stunning, there's a lot of work that goes in to producing those so to get such a fabulous result at your first try should be very pleasing to you. Yes, you're waaay too hard on yourself.
I assume you used a jig to cut the dovetails? Which one?

Thanks Aldav. It does weight quite a bit
I used a Incra LS for this one. Sure makes the job easy. Just take a bit of time getting the height of the router right (lots of trial and error). I would love to try to do this by hand but I don't think the finish would be quite as good..
Thanks

Using the Incra fence systems I find most minor fitment issues are as a result of three things:
1. Not quite getting the centre cut alignment perfect and then reversing the stock from top to bottom against the fence when cutting the dovetails,
2. Hot having the stock hard up against the fence,
3. Not having the stock hard down on the table surface when cutting the dovetails. This can sometimes be affected by the right angle fixture tilting on the table or by the stock moving slightly when clamping the stock to the right angle fixture.
All things considered I think you should be very pleased with your result. Doubt that mine are any better. Photo of WIP attached.

They reckon I'm picky but if the other 3 corners are like the one pictured, I'd be happy as! Nice job

Thanks Aldav, Nice looking box you have there.
I learned the "don't flip the stock" lesson on my first test. I now mark the side that rides the fence so it always is on the same side.
I also need to keep remembering to blow any dust and chips away from the fence before placing the stock down.
I guess this is just the fun in learning

Sensational work, and like others have already said, you are being hard on yourself.
Just make sure you post any future attempts at box making, this effort bodes well for your next show and tell.

Sharpening Box
Fantastic looking box,
I haven't even mastered single dovetails on a router table.
Yes your being to hard.
But we are our harshest critics.
Cheers Matt
