Default Simple box from Walnut and Plum

A colleague at work recently gave me a couple of boxes with what he called "a few sticks of timber" in them. One box contained smallish pieces of purpleheart, ebony, walnut, etc etc. All very nice timbers. The other box contained large pieces of walnut, houn pine, olive and other really nice timbers.

I decided to make him a box to thank him for the generous gift. It's made from a single piece of walnut, with the top and bottom panels made from some plum veneer glued to 5 ply for stability.

Finished with several coats of 3 part finish (1/3 poly, 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 tung oil) wiped on. Final finish with eee wax.

    What do you think?

Very nice arrangement of grains. I think you got the ultimate out of those pieces of wood, congratulations.

    Fantastic match of timber.

I can't make it out from the photos, how does the lid stay in place? Is the lid rebated so it fits snugly into the base?

Yes, it's rebated so it fits snuggly. I'll get a photo of the underside of the lid to show how it looks.

Nice work, and boxes are always easy to give away as gifts.

    Thumbs up

Beautifully done!! I see no reason for anyone not to like that.

The grain in the plum is most intriguing.

Beautiful box. That plum veneer looks awesome with the walnut. I love walnut. Great job.

I gave the box to the recipient the other day, and he loved it. He insisted that I sign and date the bottom of the box. Haven't had that happen before.

It's a nice feeling when people appreciate the work you put into something that looks quite simple.
